Patricia Gomez
Patricia Gómez, a television professional with more than 40 years of experience in public television, is the producer and host of Milwaukee PBS ¡Adelante!, a monthly, locally produced series that celebrates the rich heritage of Latinos and has been on the air for 24 years. The program premieres in Spanish with English subtitles, on the four Thursday of the month at 7:30 pm and is retransmitted on other days and times on Channels 10 and 36, remaining available to the public on the internet network of these stations.
Patricia has dedicated her career to seeking truth and bringing dignity to the Hispanic community by emphasizing the contributions and cultural value of this community. Giving voice to the most vulnerable and through the reports and interviews she presents, she focuses the content of her productions on the rights of families and individuals to social justice, better living conditions, economic mobility, work, education, housing and health.
Born in Nueva Rosita Coahuila, Mexico, Gómez spent more than 15 years at Channel 6 TRM, on public television in San Luis Potosí. There, she was a news producer and anchor, and had training and supervisory responsibilities. She has a bachelor's degree in Communication Sciences from the Autonomous University of San Luis Potosí and a master's degree in Educational Sciences from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.
Being Patricia Gómez, the producer and host of ¡Adelante! This program has been awarded three regional Emmy awards, by The National Academy of Television, Arts and Sciences, in 2013 and 2017 and 2022. The first recognition was obtained for a story about the Mexican American writer Luis Alberto Urrea, the second for a production about Alzheimer's disease. The third Emmy for Voces de la Frontera March: A Day Without Latinos. So far, the Academy has nominated the program for eight years for this recognition.
Gómez has interviewed dignitaries and international celebrities on Adelante!, such as Bishop Samuel Ruiz, who served as a mediator during the conflict between the Zapatista National Liberation Army, EZLN, and the Government of Mexico. The legendary Dolores Huerta, co-founder with Cesar Chavez of the United Farm Workers, UFW. The Guatemalan Nobel Peace Prize winner, Rigoberta Menchu, and ambassadors for the United States the Venezuelan, Bernardo Álvarez Herrera and recently the Mexican ambassador Martha Bárcena Coqui. She has spoken with governors such as that of Wisconsin, Jim Doyle, and Scott McCallum. With leaders of the most important Hispanic American organizations in the United States such as Raúl Humberto Yzaguirre and Janet Murguia, then Presidents of the National Council of La Raza now Unidos US and Domingo Garcia, president of the League of United Latin American Citizens, LULAC.
Patricia Gomez has been assigned to participate in the agreements between the Mexican Consulate in Milwaukee and the Milwaukee Technical College, Milwaukee Area Technical College, MATC. Aware of the objectives of these projects, Patricia Gómez has shown deep dedication and commitment. So far, one of them has been launched, La Ventanilla de Educación, and another known as Plazas Comunitarias is in process. These agreements could help Wisconsin's Hispanic communities advance their educational levels.
Also produced by Patricia Gómez, ¡Adelante! she has been awarded other major honors, including those from the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association, WBA and the Milwaukee Press Club. She also obtained a nomination from the Imagen Foundation for a story about the Flores Family, about undocumented parents and their four children born in the United States. The Flores Family, along with millions of other families, continues to face hostilities and threats under government administrations that have not enacted an Immigration Reform. This story was also featured nationally by PBS the News Hour, and earned a gold award from the Milwaukee Press Club. Gómez has been selected by the Shepherd Express as one of the most influential Latinas in the city in the area of media. “Born in Mexico, Gómez has converted the Spanish program ¡Adelante! In one of the best Hispanic productions in the Midwest, for its focus on education, social justice and culture," She has also been honored by Voces de la Frontera, a local organization that advocates for immigrant rights, for presenting and producing "an excellent and informative program...extremely important to the Latino community." The Southeastern Wisconsin Housing Corporation has also recognized then-Milwaukee Public TV for the production of the program ¡Adelante!
Gomez has been invited during Hispanic Heritage Month to make presentations at institutions such as the Local Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigations, FBI and International Corporations such as Johnson Controls. This corporation has been as sponsor of the Adelante! for more than two decades.
