Outdoor Wisconsin Host Dan Small and Mark LaBarbera holding award
The longest-running program on Milwaukee PBS was just honored with five AGLOW Awards for Excellence. At the Association of Great Lakes Outdoor Writers Conference, held this week in La Crosse, Outdoor Wisconsin was recognized for its excellence in the outdoors industry.

The AGLOW Awards were given in various categories spanning television, online, radio, print and photography. Outdoor Wisconsin received the following:
  • Dan Small and Co-Producer Mark LaBarbera won Best in TVHunting for their “Deer Hunt Wisconsin 2018” special. Their special on “Pheasants in Wisconsin” received second place recognition in this category.
  • In the category of TV/Open, Outdoor Wisconsin segment producer Jeff Kelm won first place for his segment “Honeybees in Peril” and Dan Small won second place for his “Buckskinner’s Rendezvous” segment.
  • In the category of TV/Fishing, Dan Small won third place for his segment featuring fishing on Lake Michigan.
"Mark and I are honored to receive these awards," said Dan Small. "AGLOW is the premier association of regional outdoor communicators. To be recognized in this way by our peers is very special. We are currently working on Deer Hunt Wisconsin 2019, our 27th annual deer-hunting special, which is scheduled to air on November 14 on Milwaukee PBS."

Said Jeff Kelm, "I enjoyed producing the segment on honeybees, which we shot at Dancing Bear Apiary in Waupaca County with Wisconsin Honey Producers Association President, Kent Pegorsch. I am a honey producer myself, and the information Kent provided was a real eye-opener."

For 35 seasons, Outdoor Wisconsin has been educating and delighting nature lovers and sportspersons and its beloved host, Dan Small, has been leading the adventures for all 35 seasons. At the Outdoor Writers Association of America’s national conference in June, Small was awarded the 2019 Excellence in Craft Award, which recognizes an individual Outdoor Writers Association of America member “for outstanding effort in upholding the OWAA Creed and continued excellence in craft.”

Outdoor Wisconsin airs on Milwaukee PBS Channel 10.1 on Thursdays at 9:00 p.m.
