MILWAUKEE; March 12, 2022 – Milwaukee PBS producers and co-hosts Alexandria Mack and Scottie Lee Meyers kicked off the second season of the station’s award-winning podcast, “Speaking of...” In this season, titled “Speaking of...The Missing Peace,” the producers focus on the increase of deadly domestic and intimate partner violence incidents in Milwaukee and across the state. Wisconsin lost a record high 96 people to domestic violence in 2022, a 20% increase from 2021.
Across eight episodes of in-depth analysis and investigation, listeners hear powerful narratives from the people closest to the problem and to the solution, ranging from survivors of abuse and frontline advocates, to policy experts and law enforcement authorities.
“It was important for us to include as many voices as possible from the people who have witnessed these tragedies up close and are doing the work in the community to save lives,” Mack said. Mack and Meyers examine the various factors contributing to the crisis, such as trauma and economic opportunity, as well as a criminal justice system that is still reeling from the pandemic. The series features the voices of victims and longtime community advocates. “We’ve talked to dozens of people in order to present a panoramic view of this crisis and what we’ve found is that there is much to be indignant about. But there’s also an impressive number of innovative solutions that have emerged and some newfound cooperation happening in the system,” Meyers said.
Milwaukee PBS General Manager, Debbie Hamlet explained, “These are stories that need to be heard, it’s an important topic. Milwaukee PBS is dedicated to serving our communities with valuable information.”
Episodes will be airing through April and are available wherever you find your podcasts. More information can be found at https://www.milwaukeepbs.org/speaking-of/.
