The Lutsen Mountains - July 23-27, 2024

Join Milwaukee PBS this July on a five-day adventure to Duluth, MN, and Lake Delton, WI.

July 23, 20247:30 am - Leave the Watertown Plank Park and Ride with an additional pick-up at the Pewaukee Golf Road Park and Ride. We stop for a picnic lunch along the way (I).

We continue to Siren, WI where we check into The Lodge At Crooked Lake and then have dinner at Adventures Restaurant (I). Crooked Lake Public Park is across the road from the hotel. This park includes a playground, fishing pier, boat landing, swimming beach, several horseshoe pits, and open-air pavilions. Lodge Village is adjacent to the hotel for great shopping with most stores open until 8 pm. Also available are a spa/salon, coffee shop, scrapbooking shop, kitchen shop, and general store. The local movie theater and mini golf are also steps away.

July 24, 2024 - After breakfast (I) at the resort we check out and head for Duluth, MN. We arrive at Glensheen Mansion where we enjoy lunch (I) and take a tour of the mansion. Glensheen Mansion, perched on the shores of Lake Superior, is the most visited historic home in Minnesota. You can walk the estate featuring 12 acres of gardens, bridges, and the famous 39-room mansion built with amazing 20th-century craftsmanship. Be bedazzled by the rags-to-riches story of Chester and Clara Congdon who opened up iron mining in the region. Later they gave back to Duluth by setting aside land for public use including the North Shore Scenic Byway and Congdon Park.

After the tour, we enjoy the journey along the North Shore Scenic Byway and arrive at our lodging for the night, Cove Point Lodge on Lake Superior, where every room has a water view and a true resort experience.  After we check into our rooms, we will have dinner (I) at the resort.

July 25, 2024 – After a true Swedish breakfast (I) at the resort we are off to enjoy the beauty of the Lutsen Mountains! What better way to do it than in a gondola?

The Lutsen Mountain Summit Express allows you to soar above the mountains in an enclosed gondola and rest on a perch where lunch (I) will be served. (There is an alternative restaurant at the base of the mountain for those who are afraid of heights and would rather not ascend. Lunch is on your own at that lunch spot.) After descending the mountain, you will have exploration time and dinner.

The Naniboujou Lodge was built in the 1920s as an ultra-exclusive private club. Babe Ruth, Jack Dempsey, and Ring Larner were among its charter members. The stock market crash in 1929 caused the club to fail. It’s now run as a hotel and restaurant. We will take a peek at the famous dining room and do a little shopping inside the gift shop.

We continue north to Grand Marais, a quintessential fishing town, once voted America’s Best Small Town. There are some shopping opportunities, but you will also find great coffee, ice cream, fudge, and views that will take your breath away.

You will have some time on your own, but we reconvene at The Fisherman’s Daughter for dinner (I). Just caught from Lake Superior, it is as fresh as fish can get. Not a fish person? There are non-fish alternatives to choose from. We make our way back to the resort after dinner.

July 26, 2024 After breakfast (I) at the hotel, we check out and take the scenic drive back to Duluth because it’s train time! The North Shore Scenic Railroad is one of Duluth’s main attractions. We enjoy the museum and at 1 pm climb on board for a relaxing and scenic train ride. A charcuterie board lunch (I) will be served during the trip.

After our journey, we bid Duluth goodbye. We board the bus and begin the trek south. We land for the night in the picturesque Best Western Spooner Riverplace perched on The Yellow River. We also eat dinner (I) along the way.

July 27, 2024 – We enjoy breakfast (I) at the hotel. Today we continue to drive south to The Wisconsin Dells. We enjoy lunch (I) and then experience our last adventure, The Lost Canyon Horse Tour. At Lost Canyon, you enjoy the entire tour riding through a magnificent mile of cliff-walled gorges in comfortable yet quaint horse-drawn carriages, which carry 15 passengers each. The trips take a half hour and begin on the south shore of Lake Delton. It was back in 1956 that Dr. R.O. Ebert started the horse-drawn wagon tours through Lost Canyon, the longest and deepest land canyon in Wisconsin. In 1967, the Kissack families took over the business and still operate it today, doing their part to maintain this natural treasure. At the narrowest passages, the guides must talk the horses through the tight squeeze. In some of the deeper parts, the sheer rock and sandstone wall have not felt the touch of the sun in more than 50,000 years.  After our horse-drawn ride, we head back to Milwaukee.
