About the Show

This documentary is based on Jesus Salas' memoir, "Obreros Unidos: The Roots and Legacy of the Farmworkers Movement". It explores the historical struggle of Latino migrant farmworkers during the 1960s, who came from the Texas-Mexico border seeking better conditions, similar to escaping South African apartheid. Each year, around 100,000 workers and their families traveled to work in agricultural fields. Although Wisconsin had some of the most progressive labor laws, these were not effectively enforced for the migrant workers. As a result, they united in a movement that challenged employers who denied them their rights.

You're invited to join us for a special event celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month and our vibrant Latino community!

Milwaukee PBS is proud to present the new documentary ROOTS AND LEGACY: JESUS SALAS by Producer of ¡Adelante!, Patricia Gómez, Associate Producer Salvador Gómez, and Editor Yvonne Sanchez.

The documentary ROOTS AND LEGACY: JESUS SALAS is based on Jesus Salas' memoir "Obreros Unidos: The Roots and Legacy of the Farmworkers Movement". It sheds light on the historical struggle of Latino migrant farmworkers during the 1960s.

Facing harsh living conditions, the farmworkers united to confront employers who denied them their rights. The movement led to new social services organizations and significant progress for Latinos in Wisconsin.

The screening starts at 6:30 pm, followed by a panel discussion. Don't miss out on this incredible opportunity to come together and honor the rich culture and heritage of our Latino community!

And in the years that followed, Chacon took on leadership roles in some of the groups and organizations that grew out of the protests.
